Urinetown is a satirical musical with book and lyrics by Greg Kotis and music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann, set in a dystopian future where a severe water shortage has led to a corrupt corporation controlling all public restrooms, forcing citizens to pay to pee or be banished to "Urinetown". The show, which won three Tony Awards, follows a hero who leads a revolution against this system, satirizing capitalism, social irresponsibility, and musical theater itself. Kotis conceived the idea after encountering a pay toilet in Europe, and the show debuted at the New York Fringe Festival before moving to Broadway.
