What does a comedian dream about? What is her deepest fear? In a surreal and absurd inner world, a comedian trained in Chou (丑, the clown role in Chinese Opera) searches for the origins of her comedy dream. Encountering the icons of her life: Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball, Jacques Tati, and Joan Rivers, she discovers the struggles behind the laughter: the ability to confront your true self. The Chou Speaks Back is a playful, intimate, and multidisciplinary solo performance about a comedian’s struggle to claim her own voice. Shifting across characters, memories, and dreamlike scenes, the work brings Chinese Opera into conversation with physical comedy, dance, and film. It reimagines comedy as a space where cultural inheritance, surrealism, and vulnerability meet.
