Mokeb is a dark comedy about the lengths that we go to in order to learn to trust ourselves. After making a painful, self-inflicted decision for reasons that even she can’t fully understand, Ayan arrives at the Arbaeen walk feeling lost, spiritually abandoned and confused about whether her gut feelings are misleading her. Desperate and determined to understand her mind, and regain the spirituality she once felt anchored her, Ayan joins 20 million other pilgrims on the walk to try to ground herself in a part of her identity that she has always felt culturally connected to: being Shia. In the “mokebs” (guesthouses)— otherworldly places of rest, bonding, drama and reprieve from the 110 degree heat— Ayan, along with five other women, journeys through grief, faith and unlikely friendships.
