Martin Guerre made its North American premiere at Minneapolis's Guthrie Theater in September 1999, for an eight-week engagement, starring Hugh Panaro, Erin Dilly, and Stephen R. Buntrock. Developed as a co-production between the Guthrie and Cameron Mackintosh, the show was substantially revised for American audiences: songs were rearranged, the village characters were softened and more individualized, and Mackintosh said about 40 percent of the material was new. The production then toured to Detroit, Washington, Seattle, and Los Angeles during 1999-2000. It was announced to open on Broadway on April 26, 2000, with previews beginning April 15, but the production never materialized.
